3D crosseye stereograms
Saturday, July 15th, 2006Here are some really impressive photos I’ve found on Flickr. They’re already nice macro photographs, but you can see them in 3D. And there’s hundreds of them!
These can be viewed as is by slightly de-focusing your eyes and then cross them until an image appears in the middle and then relax your eyes to get a stable 3-D image. It’s worth the trouble!
Scratch that! XSLT is the way forward
Thursday, July 13th, 2006Having sat down to write a Zooomr plugin yesterday, I then realised I wanted one for some feeds from Last.fm. That would involve writing and installing an almost identical plugin. I like general solutions, not specific ones, so here’s how I did the same job with just one plugin and a bit of XSLT magic.
PhotoFetch Wordpress plugin
Thursday, July 13th, 2006I just knocked up a plugin for Wordpress to display any Zooomr RSS feed out there. It seems to work for Flickr feeds too, which is nice. The other ones seemed too complicated.
Update: I won’t support this plugin as I’ve now ditched it in favour of an XSLT-based method, but I’m leaving this here for posterity.

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006Another great shot found on Zooomr. See chilibean’s photos for more great photos.
Jumping the sun on the salt flats
Wednesday, July 12th, 2006So cool! Wish I’d thought of this.
I spotted it via Flickr Hits, which I spotted via Zooomr Hits. Both fascinating photo blogs by Chris Sansbury.

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006Rockbox
Tuesday, July 11th, 2006I’ve had my Rio Karma now for over a year, and I’m half expecting it to die on me. So, I’m keeping an eye eye out for a replacement for when that sad day arrives. So far Rockbox on an iPod looks like my best bet. I could even get Linux on there for extra geek points.
Interestingly enough, both the Karma and the iPod are based on the same underlying technology, PortalPlayer. I wonder if anyone’s going to get Rockbox onto a Karma.
Ken Rockwell
Tuesday, July 11th, 2006It’s just occurred to me that I should give a nod to Ken Rockwell. I really like his work, and his website is a great source of information for people taking up photography. In particular, I set up my Nikon D50 based on his setup guide. His advice on patience and technique is inspiring, and helped me get some good photos with my new camera, even on my first expedition round edinburgh the night I got the camera.
Fiddling with Zooomr
Tuesday, July 11th, 2006I discovered Zooomr today, and expect to use it for storing my photos while I’m on holiday in Canada. If I’m suitably impressed by it, I might even move my entire photo page to it. Having only used it for a few hours, Zooomr already looks pretty nifty, letting me specify where the photo was taken, showing a map too.
So, here’s my first attempt at hooking in a photo from my Zooomr profile, hopefully meaning I can get a snazzy pro account in the process!
See here for more info on getting a free pro account yourself. I couldn’t find out the exact difference between the normal account (also free) and the pro account, but I think it means a huge monthly upload limit, an unlimited space quota, and no adverts. You can’t sniff at that, really.
